Phenomenal Pwaalunteers

This post is long overdue. Toward the end of the Global Round Awards Ceremony, I dashed backstage to see if more Senior Division slides were available to project; by the time I returned the ceremony had concluded in my absence. As a result, I was not able to thank from the podium the absolutely selfless volunteers who worked on the event all week long. Their efforts made every difference. Some (but not all) of those volunteers are pictured below; others were already unconscious. One endless day after another, they earned my gratitude and that of our entire community.

Yale ToC Application

It's finally live! Thank you all for your patience in the aftermath of what our entire exhausted team nonetheless wishes could have been an endless Global Round.

Yale ToC Application

A few things to keep in mind:
  • If your team is prequalified, you still need to submit the application by August 30 to confirm your attendance. This will help us know how many more spots are open for non-prequalified applicants.
  • If your team is not prequalified, please apply as soon as possible but no later than September 15.
  • Due to venue restrictions at Yale, there are limited spots available. Please apply only if you are reasonably certain you'll be able to attend if accepted.
  • All World Scholar's Cup teams that participated this last season can apply, even those who did not attend the Global Round, though priority will be given to those that did.
  • Participants at upcoming regional rounds between now and the ToC will be qualifying for next year's Global Round, not the 2014 ToC.
  • The tentative (95% certain) dates of the ToC are November 21-24, which check-in on the evening of November 20.
  • If you don't hear back from us right away, don't worry. We need time to receive and review many applications before we can start answering any of them. Pre-qualified teams that apply on time can of course safely assume they'll be able (and expected!) to attend.

Regional and Primary Winners in Singapwaa

There was no time to honor these extraordinary accomplishments at the closing ceremony. Congratulations to all our regional winners, and to our first place primary team from Brighton College in Abu Dhabi -- which was also the highest-scoring team from the Middle East in the entire junior division! While these slides are also part of the final Closing Ceremony PDF already in circulation, we wanted to draw some well-deserved special attention to them with this separate blog post.

Additional ToC Pre-Qualifiers | Where Have All the Wildcards Gone?

Many scholars have asked if we will have "waves" of wildcard qualifiers for the ToC as we did in past seasons. This year, we'll be using a (soon-to-be-posted) application process instead. Pre-qualified teams that submit their applications on time will be accepted automatically.

To better understand the reasons for the change, please consider the junior division, with over 400 teams participating:

  • The 100th place team scored 26,027 points.
  • The 163rd place team scored 25,011 points.
  • The 225th place team scored 24,042 points.

In other words, 125 teams were clustered within 2000 points of one another. We would feel uneasy drawing an arbitrary line within this range and saying, "Teams above this line can go to Yale. Teams below cannot." The application process will allow teams below the pre-qualification threshold to apply for well-deserved berths if their reasons for attending are strong and space remains for them to register.

At the same time, over the last week, we have exhaustively reviewed the Global Round results, leading to some modest updates, especially in the senior division, where certain individual overall awards were presented last Friday on the basis of only one or two events. (We are so sorry for any confusion or discomfort caused.) In recognition that these updates have adjusted some of the final standings, we have both increased the number of medalists in certain events and pre-qualified additional teams for the Tournament of Champions. Please see the updated PDF below:

Global Round Closing Ceremony

Thank you again to the incredible community of over nearly 2400 scholars and their coaches, chaperones, and family members who gathered in Singapore last week for the largest Global Round in our program's history. It was something we could never have brought to life, or seen through from beginning to end, without your endless friendship and support; your messages and photos ever since have only continued to inspire and replenish us. #letitpwaa

We have much more to share with you in the days ahead, including details on how to apply for and confirm both automatic and wildcard berths at our upcoming Yale University Tournament of Champions, and we'll also be requesting your detailed feedback as we look to make 2015 even better than 2014 -- but, for now, here are the consolidated junior and (ghost-free) senior results we know many of you have been waiting for:

Please note: especially in the senior division, some results may vary (usually in small ways) from those shown on screen Friday. If there are medals listed you didn't receive in person, please ask your coach to email contact@scholarscup.org with a complete list of the awards your school needs, and with a shipping address, and we will do our best to send them to you as soon as possible -- or to deliver them in person!

An Alpaca in Every Pwaat

Alpacanation! If you didn't receive your Jerry at the Global Round, please ask your coach to email contact@scholarscup.org to let us know how many your school still needs (and to include a delivery address) and we'll ship you a set as soon as possible. If your coach is unavailable, email us directly. No Global Round scholar should be without a Jerry.

Stay Tuned / Sorry for the Delay

Over here we're putting the finishing touches on a consolidated awards presentation and should have it up soon. Thanks for your tremendous patience and support -- we miss you all already.

Final Debate Schedules | Bus Time Correction | Pwaafari Reminder

Hi Guys!

Important error from the previous post - Busing will start at 8:00am, not 8:30. Don't fret - the busing won't finish until everyone is accounted for (we promise!), and we would never want you to skip breakfast due to last night's error, but do please make your way downstairs as soon as you're ready, because the earlier you get on the buses, the more likely we are to start on time. Sorry for the error; turns out sleepy alpacas are more likely to make mistakes.

Party on, Pacas | End of Day 1, Preview of Day 2

Alpacas, alpacas everywhere! We hope everyone had a wonderful day, and is excited for tomorrow as they are exhausted from today. After welcoming 2,350 students, a dozen dignitaries, and some very special alpacas (with more on the way), we trotted all over Sentosa and danced and laughed our way through the Wavehouse. As we make our way home, delighted and drained, it's time we look to the day ahead: Debates, Writing and Challenges await!

Day 2 - Writing, Challenge, Debate, Pwaafari

WSC Special: Alpaca My Bags!

Recommended packing supplies and attire for the WSC Global Round brought to you by Jerry the Alpaca and Terran Kroft!

You’re going to be in Singapore for the largest World Scholar’s Cup Global Round ever. Here’s a potential list of items that you might need to survive the week. Singapore’s right by the equator, so it can get a little hot and humid. You might want to prepare some light clothing and maybe a raincoat or an umbrella.

Day 0: Registration
On this day, your chaperone will visit one of the designated check-in areas to register for your school or team. You’ll probably be hanging around in your hotel, or visiting nearby attractions. Some light clothing would suffice for this day.

Day 1: Ceremonies
The first day of the Global Round is an eventful one.

Admission for Adults to the Scholar's Ball

There have been a number of inquiries regarding supervision of children during the Scholar's Ball at Zouk. WSC staff will be managing the event along with the additional security that has been hired for the venue. Only participants of WSC are allowed admission into the venue.

For AIAs and other adult chaperons still interested in attending the Scholar's Ball, WSC will be offering admission tickets during check-in. Tickets will be priced at $48 SGD and will include unlimited access to soft drinks.
