WSC Special: Alpaca My Bags!

Recommended packing supplies and attire for the WSC Global Round brought to you by Jerry the Alpaca and Terran Kroft!

You’re going to be in Singapore for the largest World Scholar’s Cup Global Round ever. Here’s a potential list of items that you might need to survive the week. Singapore’s right by the equator, so it can get a little hot and humid. You might want to prepare some light clothing and maybe a raincoat or an umbrella.

Day 0: Registration
On this day, your chaperone will visit one of the designated check-in areas to register for your school or team. You’ll probably be hanging around in your hotel, or visiting nearby attractions. Some light clothing would suffice for this day.

Day 1: Ceremonies
The first day of the Global Round is an eventful one.
Not only is there the Opening Ceremony and Keynote, there is also the Scavenge at Sentosa Island. Again, light clothing is recommended – and maybe even a raincoat or an umbrella in case of rain. An extra set of clothes may be beneficial!

Day 2: Scholar’s Events
This day is filled with writing, challenges, and debates. Presentation is a criterion in the Team Debate, so you’ll want to wear something semi-formal or formal on this day. If your team or school decides to wear uniforms for the debates, then wearing them is recommended (and probably required by your coach). The Optional Night Pwaafari takes place at night, however, so you might want to change into some light clothing by then.

Day 3: Bowl & Ball
We begin with the Bowl - it’s all seated, so you might want to just wear light clothing or your school uniform, unless you really want to look formal. The AC will probably be on, so if you don’t want to get too cold, you might want to bring a jacket.
If you’re in the Scholar’s Show, bring the props or clothing you need for it. Remember to submit the Scholar’s Show form beforehand so WSC will know which music file to play.
The Scholar’s Ball takes place at Zouk! There will be dancing and cheering, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. You'll also have time to go back to the hotel and change for the ball, so don't worry about bringing an extra change of clothes for the day.

Day 4: The End
Again, as always, light clothing or designated clothing. Be prepared to cry as you leave the friends you meet (but you’ll see them on Facebook, right?)

What else?
For most of the events, you’ll be allowed electronics, such as a phone, tablet, or a laptop. Be advised that you are responsible for these devices, so you’ll want to keep them close to you. The ability to charge these devices in the venues is not guaranteed. But bring a travel adaptor and chargers for these devices anyways - you can charge them in your hotel.
Bring writing utensils. In the past they have been provided, but it’s always good to play safe and bring your own.

If you have your own alpacas from previous rounds, bring them! I don’t think you can bring live alpacas, though.

Pwaa,
Terran Kroft & Jerry the Alpaca

  1. Thank you for this information.

  2. Haha I'll recommend bringing N95 masks too, just in case. During this period last year, Singapore experienced a crazy high haze (due to the burning of peat from neighboring countries) thus a mask to block out harmful particles is advised! (:

  3. While this may be possible, as someone who has been in Singapore the last two weeks, I'm happy to report clear, beautiful skies!
