Many scholars have asked if we will have "waves" of wildcard qualifiers for the ToC as we did in past seasons. This year, we'll be using a (soon-to-be-posted) application process instead. Pre-qualified teams that submit their applications on time will be accepted automatically.
To better understand the reasons for the change, please consider the junior division, with over 400 teams participating:
In other words, 125 teams were clustered within 2000 points of one another. We would feel uneasy drawing an arbitrary line within this range and saying, "Teams above this line can go to Yale. Teams below cannot." The application process will allow teams below the pre-qualification threshold to apply for well-deserved berths if their reasons for attending are strong and space remains for them to register.
At the same time, over the last week, we have exhaustively reviewed the Global Round results, leading to some modest updates, especially in the senior division, where certain individual overall awards were presented last Friday on the basis of only one or two events. (We are so sorry for any confusion or discomfort caused.) In recognition that these updates have adjusted some of the final standings, we have both increased the number of medalists in certain events and pre-qualified additional teams for the Tournament of Champions. - The 100th place team scored 26,027 points.
- The 163rd place team scored 25,011 points.

If my team is included in the wildcard pre-qualifiers, would it be easier for me to apply for a berth at the ToC or will anyone have the same chances of applying and getting accepted?
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteIf your team is in the wildcard pre-qualifier, your team will be will be accepted as long as your team submits the (to-be-posted) application before the (to-be-announced) deadline.
Will it still be acceptable if only 2/3 of the original team members apply? Would it change anything if we replace 1 of the members that will not be able to come?
DeleteYup! As long as a team contains TWO (2) scholars qualified for the ToC, they should be fine.
DeleteDo Challenge Honor Rolls get medals? Say my teammate made it to the updated Science Challenge Honor Roll but didn't get a medal in the closing ceremony; does that mean we could request an extra medal?
ReplyDeleteYes they do! Please contact Jeremy (jeremy [at] scholarscup [dot] org) for medals!
DeleteAlright, that's good to know. It's just that it feels a bit awkward to ask for a shipment of just one medal.. thank you for answering!
DeleteHi I noticed that some of the teams which were placed in the top 50 teams were also placed as wildcard qualifiers. Is this meant to happen? Aren't they already qualified?
ReplyDeleteJust a suggestion to the WSC staff: perhaps you could introduce an award category for top team from each school.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Rishab
Hey :) I saw MeowMeow26's comment and I kind of check the TOC qualifiers slide. All of the top 50 teams (except the "top 10 countdown" teams) were also placed as TOC qualifiers. Is it supposed to happen?
ReplyDeleteShould be renamed Global Round Results 2.1 "L"
ReplyDeleteAndroid WSC Results Version "L" is still in developer preview.
DeleteAnd also, if you were one of the top three individuals in a regional round, is there a strong chance you will be accepted to go to Yale?
ReplyDeleteAny achievement in a regional round counts probably for nothing in the global round. It's the global round that matters, besides, the list of all the pre-qualifiers are out.
DeleteBut what if your team actually came first?
DeleteRegional results don't transfer directly to Yale qualification. But when you apply for qualification, you can mention that you were first in regionals, and that could possibly boost your chances. One of the Senior Division teams at my school did that last year and qualified :-) (But then again, one of the members was 9th place debater at Globals, so it might've been that that qualified them...) Anyway, give it a try. Hope it works out for you!
DeleteA friend of mine got top scorer from our school in the closing ceremony but now there is someone else's name
ReplyDeleteAlso 1 team from my school got some medals which they don't have now
there are two 214 in yale qualifier list in junior
ReplyDeleteI thought the top 100 or 120 teams qualified but it only shows the top 50. Why is this?
ReplyDeletedo we get a medal for honor roll for writing?
ReplyDeleteHow do we get to know whats our team's position?
ReplyDeleteYou can email the WSC staff at contact@scholarscup.org and they can send you your team's overall score with percentages, and you can also ask for individual certificates :-) But I just emailed them and Zac can't reply to his emails right now, so it might take some time.
